About the game

Grand strategy, with the heart of a good dog

Barkopolis is a love letter to the golden age of turn-based 4X strategy — the hex maps, the tech trees, the wonder races, the late-night "one more turn" — rebuilt from scratch so that a seven-year-old and a forty-year-old can both play it honestly, each in their own language.

What you actually do

You lead one of six dog packs. You start with a settler and a scout on a hex map covered in fog. From there, the classic loop unfolds: found cities, assign pups to work the land, research a five-era tree of dog technologies (from Stick Catching to Supreme Disc Dynamics), train units, build wonders, adopt Play Styles and training regimens, trade Treats and resources with rival leaders, and steer toward one of five victories:

Underneath is a full strategy engine: rivers and trade networks, culture pressure on border cities, specialists, espionage (the politest kind), veteran retraining, defensive pacts, scenarios, and an AI opponent for every personality — the diplomat, the warlord, the showdog.

The rules of kindness

Barkopolis has conflict — it's a strategy game — but the stakes are cartoon stakes, enforced by the engine itself:

One game, two voices

Kid Mode speaks like a friendly coach: simple objectives, a glowing "do this next" button, celebration confetti, and one take-back per turn for oops moments. Adult Mode speaks fluent strategy: pre-combat odds, vitals breakdowns, and an advisor who says things like "Research complete. Science output is idle." The rules are identical in both — kids play the real game, not a toy version.

For parents, plainly

The game contains no ads, no purchases, no chat, no accounts, and no trackers. It runs entirely on your device and works offline. Save games never leave the browser. The full details live on the privacy page, written in one screen of plain English.

The royal pair

The Labrador Retriever Empire is ruled by Queen Georgia (a black Lab) and Empress Virginia (a red Lab) — modeled on two very real, very good dogs. Georgia loves to play ball, which is why the scenario about the neighborhood's greatest sporting event is called Race for the Ball. Every pack leader in the game gets the same treatment: a painted portrait, a personality, and strong opinions about fences.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 4X strategy game?

4X stands for explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate — the four things empires do in classic turn-based strategy. In Barkopolis the fourth X is friendlier: packs compete and scuffle, but a defeated pup simply Tail-Tucks and runs home.

Is it really free?

Completely. No price, no ads, no purchases, no accounts. It is a passion project by Mabry Product Studios.

What ages is it for?

Kid Mode reads well from about age 6 playing solo (younger with a co-pilot). Adult Mode is a full-depth 4X for teens and up. Same rules in both — only the voice changes.

Does anyone die?

No. It is a rule of the engine, not a setting. Every dog is okay, always.

Does it work offline?

Yes — it's an installable web app. After the first load it works without a connection.

Where are saves stored?

On your device, in the browser. Autosave every turn; export/import as a file to move between devices. There is no server.

Does it use AI?

The rivals run on classic deterministic game AI — hand-written rules, fully scripted dialogue. No generative AI at runtime; same seed and same moves replay the same game, every time.
